Vasa akterspegel

Ordered by King Gustav II Adolf, a regent obsessed with status symbols, the magnificent ship Vasa sank after only 1,300m in front of spectators on its first journey in August 1628. After several failed attempts the ship was finally salvaged in 1961. Almost intact after 333 years in the water, it’s now on display here in its full glory.

Midsummer’s Eve 20th June

skansen_midsommar_2014

Midsummer (20-22 june) is one of Sweden’s biggest holidays and most cherished traditions. The summer solstice is celebrated with family and friends. Visitors can experience a traditional Midsummer’s Eve at the Skansen Open-air Museum – download the preliminary programme for Skansens Midsummer 2014 – but there are also celebrations with dancing and music in Stockholm’s major parks, for example Vasaparken and Tantolunden.
Many Stockholmers leave the city to visit the archipelago or countryside homes to meet friends and families, eat pickled herring and new potatoes washed down with schnapps and beer. As this is a major holiday, many stores, restaurants and attractions are closed or close early. Stockholm Guesthouse still have available holiday homes such as apartments and bed & breakfast accommodations.
