Olafur Eliasson and Reality machines

eliasson

A fan circles in an irregular orbit above our heads, water squirts up in cascades, and in another room we can walk in a labyrinthine architecture of coloured space. These works are part of the exhibition Olafur Eliasson: Verklighetsmaskiner/Reality machines, organised by Moderna Museet in association with ArkDes (the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design).

Olafur Eliasson (b. 1967, Denmark/Iceland) is one of the most acclaimed international artists today. Since the early 1990s, his works have been presented in countless exhibitions all over the world. Eliasson uses a variety of media, including sculpture, photography, film and installation, but he also creates architectural projects and site-specific pieces for public spaces. Light, wind and water in every conceivable form feature prominently. And yet, nature is present in the works as material rather than as subject matter.

Nils Dardel and the Modern Age

1-doende-dandyn

Nils Dardel is one of Sweden’s most popular artists. The Moderna Museet’s exhibition Nils Dardel and the Modern Age stresses that Dardel was not just a dandyish eccentric in the salons of high society. In fact, he took part actively in the cosmopolitan avant-garde in Paris and used art to convey the early 20th century jazz era and the modern approach to all kinds of human relationships.
The exhibition features some 100 works – including several iconic works such as The Dying Dandy (1918), Visit to an Eccentric Lady (1921), Crime of Passion (1921), and The Waterfall (1921) – mostly paintings and drawings, but also Nils Dardel’s palette, programmes from the Ballets suédois and a stage model and the score for the ballet The Madhouse.

The exhibtion runs 29 May 2014 – 14 September 2014 at Moderna Museet

Gabriel Orozco – Natural Motion

Gabriel Orozco

Gabriel Orozco, was born in Mexico in 1962 and lives in Paris, New York and Mexico City. He is one of the most widely recognised artists of his generation but has not been shown in the Nordic countries until now.

In Moderna Museet’s ambition to feature art from beyond the Western mainstream, Gabriel Orozco is a key figure to understanding the contemporary world. Regardless of medium – be it sculpture, photography, painting or installation – his works are based on the place where he dwells, sometimes in apparent improvisations, but often serially over long periods of time. A ground-breaking work, La DS from 1993 (a radically compressed Citroën car) is shown in a new version here, and a 15 metre long whale skeleton, meticulously drawn in black graphite, sails into the exhibition space as a reminder of the transience of life. The artist alternates inimitably between the momentary and the eternal, sometimes within the same group of works. It took Gabriel Orozco a long time to get to our latitude, but here he is, at last.

Cindy Sherman – Untitled Horrors

Cindy-Sherman

Cindy Sherman is one of today’s most important artists. Her photography is instantly accessible, but also labyrinthine and contradictory. The artist herself is both model and photographer, but the pictures are not portraits. Sherman’s works conjure up narratives without revealing anything themselves. They cull material from a flow of film, art and media, creating links between the familiar and the unknown. What in her pictures do we want to believe, and why? Cindy Sherman circumvents the rational, categorical eye.
